Why millions of German residents can't vote on Brexit

It has come to light that millions of Germans, who live in the European Union, are not able to vote in the upcoming referendum in Great Britain on whether to leave the EU or not.

Germany, along with Austria and Switzerland, is not a member of the European Union, meaning that those with dual citizenship between those nations cannot vote for either the Remain or the Leave camp, even if their countries are in the European Union.

If Johnson won the backing of the UK electorate, it would lead to Britain's withdrawal from the EU in 2019.

If Britons vote to remain in the EU, they will decide the terms of Britain's exit from the EU.
